One of the many perks of homeschooling is that you do not have to watch your child trudge out the door each day, bowed down with the weight of a backpack full of textbooks, notebooks, and pencil cases. Yet, the weight and burden of backpacks are still present during the homeschool day, just not on the kids’ backs. Homeschool parents can subconsciously carry their own backpacks—backpacks of self-doubt, fear of teaching, and insecurity. Backpacks that can hold parents back from reaching their true potential in homeschooling.
As a homeschool parent, you constantly give to your learners. You give your time, energy, money, and focus to your children every day. But sometimes the worries of the day can erode and block God’s promises from view, turning faith into doubt. You may compare your own family to other homeschool families, have doubts about your teaching style, and worry about whether homeschooling is right for your children. Eventually, the backpack that you never wanted your children to wear crushes you with the weight of each fear and doubt shoved into the pockets and bursting the seams.
We are reminded of God’s faithfulness in Psalm 55:22, “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” Each time you feel a niggling of doubt or fear about homeschooling, cast each and every worry on God instead of placing it in the backpack that threatens to defeat you. Saturate your day with scripture and encouragement by starting your day with devotions, writing scripture verses on sticky notes and posting them around the house, and singing God’s praises amidst the cloud of worry.
When insecurity about homeschooling tries to force itself in with the fear and doubt in your backpack, have confidence in the parent and teacher God has equipped you to be. Micah 6:8 says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” God has called you to Christian homeschooling, and He will bring you over each mountain you come across. Ditch your backpack and let God’s promises live freely in your life.
