Looking for a fun homeschool activity your children will love this summer? Beat the heat this Fourth of July and eliminate the "I'm bored" summertime blues with this kid-friendly recipe for cool, refreshing homemade ice cream.

Recipe Ingredients:

1 cup half and half
2 tbsp. sugar
½ tsp. vanilla
½ cup salt (kosher or rock salt works best)
Ice cubes (enough to fill a gallon-size bag half full)
1 gallon-size, zip locking plastic bag
1 pint-size, zip locking plastic bag

Step 1
: Combine half and half, sugar, and vanilla in the pint-size bag and seal tightly. Set aside.

Step 2: Place ice cubes and salt in the gallon-size bag. Add the sealed, smaller bag and then tightly seal the larger bag. Now, let the fun begin! Shake the bags until the half and half mixture hardens (usually about 5-10 minutes). To determine when ice cream is done, simply remove the smaller bag and squeeze.

Step 3: When the ice cream is the correct consistency, remove the smaller bag from the larger one and wipe clean. Add fresh fruit or your favorite ice cream toppings, and enjoy your ice cream right out of the bag. Your kids will love the great taste, and you'll especially love the easy cleanup afterwards! Serves 1.
